therapy relies on a

supportive + collaborative

relationship.

frequently asked questions

  • I’m based in Los Angeles, California, but can provide therapy via telehealth (phone or video sessions) to folks all throughout the state. Unfortunately, I am unable to provide services to anyone located outside the state of California.

Currently, I am currently only seeing clients via telehealth (phone or video sessions). All video sessions are conducted via a secure HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform.

  • Therapy can be expensive and I believe you should be matched with the right therapist before committing to the financial (and emotional) investment. This consultation call is where you can tell me about your situation and ask any questions you might have about how I can help. It’s a great opportunity for you to get a sense of my personality and therapeutic style — and it’s also an opportunity for me to make sure I have the right tools, style, and skillset to be an effective therapist for you. If by the end of the call I feel that I’m not the right therapist for you, I will give you an appropriate referral to another therapist who I feel may better be able to help.

  • There is a 24-hour cancellation policy for scheduled appointments. If sessions are cancelled within 24 hours, there is a late cancellation fee. If you do not show up for your appointment within 15 minutes of the scheduled time (also known as a “no show”), you will be responsible for the full cost of your session. True emergencies that occur within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

  • This is another one of those questions that just doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all answer. Sometimes, folks come to therapy to address a specific issue. Other times, folks know something is “off” but aren’t sure what, and it may take some time to uncover the layers that are keeping them stuck. Honestly, there are so many factors that might contribute to the length of therapy, so it’s difficult to predict until we spend some time working together. Typically, clients commit to therapy for a period of anywhere from 4-6 months to a year and sometimes more. Throughout our work together we will be measuring and discussing your progress periodically to make sure we’re on track with your goals.

  • Therapy sessions are traditionally 50 minutes long, so that may be a great starting point! Every person comes to therapy with different needs, experiences, and backgrounds that may influence the therapeutic process. There is no right or wrong way to engage in therapy and together we can collaborate to determine the most effective format for your treatment.

Generally, for individuals seeking EMDR services, I recommend a longer session duration to ensure we have adequate time for each stage of the process, but this is not required.

Sessions typically occur weekly and I do ask new clients to commit to 3-4 weekly appointments as part of the assessment period. As our work together continues, we can adjust the frequency of sessions to be more or less frequent as needed.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of treatment that is very different from traditional talk therapy because it utilizes the natural coping mechanism that occurs during REM sleep to resolve unprocessed trauma. When a single traumatic event occurs, or you are repeatedly subjected to traumatic experiences, the brain’s natural way of storing and processing information can become overwhelmed. When this happens, the disturbing sensations, images, emotions, and other aspects associated with the trauma can remain stuck, in their raw form, and triggered by everyday experiences. With repeated bilateral stimulation (traditionally eye movements, hence the name, but sometimes in other forms), the memory gets “reprocessed” and tends to change into a more neutral memory without the painful emotional intensity. We will go over the science behind this modality at length before we begin using it together to make sure that you understand what we’ll be doing. To learn more about EMDR, check out emdria.org.
